The 7 Coolest (Non-Fishing) Things I Saw at IFTD

The 7 Coolest (Non-Fishing) Things I Saw at IFTD

Last month I had the opportunity to attend the 2019 International Fly Tackle Dealer (IFTD) show at the Denver Convention Center with DUN Magazine for the first time.  The sheer volume of people to talk to and things to see was overwhelming, but I had the chance to speak with a lot of fantastic people and observe the scenery, so to speak.  Here are some of the things I enjoyed most from my one-day journey. #Kickplastic These signs adorned the entrance to the exhibition hall, announcing that IF

An Introduction to Fly Tying Hooks

An Introduction to Fly Tying Hooks

“Now you must understand that the hardest and most difficult thing in producing your tackle is the making of your hooks. In order to make these, it is necessary for you to have a set of sharp, thin and lightly beaten files, a seamy iron clamp, and a pair of long and small pincers, a somewhat thick and hard knife, an anvil, and a small hammer.”  - Dame Juliana Berners When Dame Juliana Berners penned those words in A Treatyse of Fysshynge With an Angle in the late 15th century, the Angle she ref

Hook Anatomy

Hook Anatomy

Eye: The eye of the hook is where the tippet is tied. The eye can be up-turned, down-turned, or straight. In general, Spey style and salmon hooks have up-turned eyes, dry fly and wet fly hooks have down-turned eyes, and streamer, bass and saltwater hooks have straight eyes. The orientation of the hook eye is largely aesthetic and only comes into play when a knot used to attach the fly to the tippet is affixed to the shank and not the hook eye. Shank:  The shank is where the fly is tied and can

Muscadine Wine

Muscadine Wine

A southern American tradition that is as synonymous with the south as moonshine, biscuits and gravy, and country ham. Learn how to make your own country wine. It's easier than you think.  What comes to mind when you hear muscadine wine? Does it remind you of the lyrics in a country song? A syrupy sweet drink? Small town USA? Muscadine grapes can be found growing wild throughout the southeastern and south-central United States and have an unforgettable flavor. Some say they have a hint of honey

Susan Thrasher of Southern Brookies Fly Fishing

Susan Thrasher of Southern Brookies Fly Fishing

About an hour outside of Nashville, in the little town of Lancaster, Tennessee, is a picturesque camp on a beautiful trout stream. Dotted by trout-painted vintage campers with a view of the Caney Fork River, I talked to Southern Brookies’ founder Susan Thrasher about fountain pens, life lessons, and euro-nymphing over a glass of southern hospitality. Jen: Are you a native of Tenness? I was born in Mobile, Alabama and moved to Bristol, Tennessee when I was two. Jen: Before Southern brookies, wh

The Stages of Grief

The Stages of Grief

When I was 14, my father taught me about fishing holes. We waded into the shallows of the Platte, the sun at our necks, muddy water lapping our ankles. He would point to the other side of the bank where the otherwise quick, singing water stilled and lay quiet. “That is where the fish rest” he would always say. He taught me to seek the calm that nature provides, despite its haunting chaos. When I was 19, my father taught me that despite seeking out the fishing holes, despite the singing water ar
