After The Fires

After The Fires

“There were no fish kills observed immediately after the fires. We do not anticipate any short or long-term population impacts on the trout streams in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.” says Matt Kulp, Supervisory Fishery Biologist for Great Smoky Mountains National Park. I had just picked up the kids from school on Monday afternoon, November 28th when my husband Ian called and asked “Have you heard any news this afternoon? The winds are carrying the embers from the Chimneys fire and spr

Float Tube Fishing

Float Tube Fishing

It always surprises me that so many people who fish with a fly rod have not yet tried fishing from a float tube. Many of those folks tell me that is because there are so many different models and types to choose from that they don’t know how to judge which might be the best for them. Once you get introduced to float tubes you’ll see that they enable you to fish a lake or pond by yourself, and that the peace and quiet you’ll encounter will enable you to do some wonderful wildlife viewing too. Du

How To Plan a Women's Fishing Clinic

How To Plan a Women's Fishing Clinic

Be intimidated by the idea of planning a women’s fly fishing clinic. Have no idea how or why you would want to host one. You’re not “qualified” anyways, right?  Right, of course not. When the idea refuses to leave you alone, mention it to friends over beers to see if they’ll take the bait. “Would you go to a fishing clinic if I hosted one?” You’ll ask. “Yeah! What a great idea! I’ll totally go,” they’ll inevitably say in return (could be the beer talking). Of course they will. Immediately regre

Stripah!

Stripah!

My first memories of fishing in saltwater are at Hampton Beach, over the bridge from Seabrook.  My father would drive my brother and me over the bridge and drop us off while he went to the local store to buy the Barrons’ weekly paper.  Ah, the days of dropping kids off at the bridge!  My brother and I would drop our sinking line to catch whatever we could on worms, and we almost always got flounder.  I remember wanting to keep the Pet Flounder alive for a few hours … this was before my catch-and

American Brown Trout

American Brown Trout

What is an American Brown Trout? The species first came to the U.S. in 1883, when a New York fish farmer named Fred Mather imported brown trout eggs from Baron Lucius von Behr, president of the German Fishing Society. (That’s why many folks refer to the fish as German browns.) Two years later, eggs from Scotland’s Loch Leven arrived and were sent to the same three hatcheries and the prevailing theory is that the genetic stocks were mixed to create what Robert Behnke calls the “American generic

Fly Line Tapers

Fly Line Tapers

In this edition’s Firming Your Foundation, we are going to talk about line weights.  Now, remember this is a brief overview, and by no means a comprehensive package.  For the sake of time and sanity, we will be talking about weight forward, double taper, shooting head and level lines.  For the most part, the name of the line already explains a bit about it, but just to firm your foundation a bit more, we will go into detail below. Weight-Forward taper: As the name suggests, the weight forward (

Whip Finisher

Whip Finisher

A whip finisher is a knot tying tool for a fly tier.  This tool is very easy to use but still seems to mystify many out there.  To learn how to use a whip finisher click here. A whip finish is a great way to finish a fly with a knot and not need to add head cement to the fly.  Unlike a series of half hitch knots, a properly executed whip finish should not come apart. Although a whip finish knot can be accomplished by using fingers, in some cases the tool comes in handy; for example, when tryin

Wading Staff

Wading Staff

A wading staff is an important piece of safety equipment all anglers should carry with them.  Of course if your only fishing in sandy waters that are ankle deep with no boulders to negotiate or if you only fish out of a boat, then a staff might not be necessary for you.  But if you're like me and end up wading where you shouldn't, a staff is a handy tool to get you out of a difficult spot or into prime water where many are unwilling to go. Wading staffs are a great tool to feel the bottom for d

Cul De Canard (CDC)

Cul De Canard (CDC)

Cul De Canard better known as CDC is used primarily for dry flies such as the F Fly and the Moustique. The actual translation of Cul de Canard is duck butt even though these feathers are from the back of a duck directly around the preen gland and not from the butt (that doesn't stop us from calling them duck butt feathers).   The preen gland secrets an oil that the duck uses for cleaning and waterproofing.  This makes these feathers very buoyant. It is very important to note that using gink or
