Hooked on SPF: My Favorite Sunscreens for Wild Adventures

Why Sunscreen Matters for Outdoor Peeps

Burnt again? Been there. I don’t want to do that again.

I’ve learned my lesson more times than I care to admit, but now I’ve got a routine with products I trust and practical tips that work. We all know by now too much sun isn’t doing us any favors. Unless you’re aiming to age yourself into a wrinkled prune, it’s time to protect your skin. Not to mention… a bad sunburn is just straight-up miserable.

So, here’s my tried-and-true girlfriend tip-the one that keeps me from repeating bad decisions:

Apply your sunscreen before you leave for your adventure.

Even if your alarm is going off at zero dark thirty.

Yes, putting on cold sunscreen at 4 a.m. is not ideal- but it beats a red-hot burn every time. Whether you’re stepping out of the house, the camper, or unzipping your tent, make it the first thing you do. That way, when the adventure starts, you’re ready to cast, paddle, run, pedal, or just get after it.

Because let’s be honest- once the fun kicks in, nobody wants to deal with sticky, messy sunscreen.

I don’t always reapply unless it’s truly necessary and the day calls for it- but when I do, I keep it close and use products that are low-mess and actually work.

What Makes a Good Sunscreen?

Look for:

  • SPF 30–50+ minimum
  • Water and sweat resistance
  • Non-greasy formula
  • No stinging eyes
  • Easy reapplication (sticks are clutch)

One more thing, ditch the spray sunscreens.
You miss spots; it blows everywhere, and fishing guides hate it on their boats. Go with lotions, gels or sticks so you get coverage where it counts!

My Favorite Sunscreens for Women in the Wild

Best Everyday Face Sunscreen

Kiehl’s Super Fluid Daily UV Defense

  • Super lightweight
  • Non-greasy
  • Doesn’t clog pores
  • Doesn’t run into eyes

Why I love it:
This is my go-to for everything- on the water or under makeup. A little goes a long way. It’s pricier, but dang… it works, and it lasts. Don’t overthink it- add to cart. You’ll thank me later.

Protect your face at all costs. Trust.

Best Body Sweat-Proof Sunscreen for Long Days Outside

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch SPF 55

Trader Joe’s Invisible Gel SPF 40

  • High SPF
  • Water and sweat resistant
  • Holds up while fishing, hiking, paddleboarding, or going full-send

 Why I love it:

These are my top picks. They go on smooth, stay non-sticky, and skip that overpowering tropical smell. They’ve held up through long days doing what I love most posted on the bow of a skiff, chasing tarpon. Best part? You don’t even feel like you’re wearing sunscreen.

Best Sunscreen Stick

Sun Bum Premium Face Stick 30 SPF

Perfect for:

  • Lips
  • Nose
  • Cheeks
  • Ears

 Why I love it:

Lips burn fast, especially with wind on the water. I use this mostly for lips, but it’s clutch for quick reapplication on your face, hands, or even the tops of your feet.

It’s a true all-in-one pro stick- slim, clean, and easy to stash in a pocket for quick access.

Pro Tips for Sun Protection on the Water

  • Reapply every 2 hours (or sooner if you’re sweating hard)
  • Don’t forget ears, back of neck, hands, and tops of feet
  • Use buffs, hats, and sunglasses
  • Keep a sunscreen stick close

Final Thoughts: Protect the Skin You’re Living In

Apply before you leave. Reapply when you need to-we’re all adults here, you do you.

But don’t skip the spots that always get burned: face, ears, neck, hands, and feet.

The outdoors gives us everything-adventure, peace, wild places, and stories we’ll tell forever. Taking care of your skin means you get to keep showing up for all of it.

Good sunscreen isn’t just another beauty product. It’s essential gear!
