International Women's Fly Fishing Day

International Women's Fly Fishing Day

Saturday, September 12th at 11 am in every time zone something incredible is going to happen. Female fly anglers from across the globe will begin posting photos of themselves at fly fishing events or doing something fly fishing related.  This is the start of something great. This is International Women's Fly Fishing Day. I caught up with Madeleine Kelly from Ireland, who is one of the two women at the helm of IWFFD.  Maddy and her co-creator, Pamela Dunlap from West Virginia (USA), are about to

Basque in Glory

Basque in Glory

I was born in 1984 in Bilbao, a city that belongs to Basque Country, which is a small region in Northern Spain, west of the Pyrenees Mountains, and made up of three provinces: Bizkaia, Gipuzkoa, and Araba. It is a region with its own language called Euskera, where talking about food, wine, and fly fishing is almost a religion. Cuddled by the Cantabrian Sea, Basque is a mountainous and very green country due to the abundance of rain. The terrain suddenly gathers height from the sea inward toward

Gold Rush

Gold Rush

Quietly crawling through marshland with my rod balanced on my shoulder and doing my best to stay out of sight, I was reminded of stalking chalk stream trout in the British countryside, not a technique I had anticipated when fishing for the aggressive golden dorado in the Ibera Marsh of Northern Argentina. But, I was in fact after salminus brasiliensis, and this morning’s delicate roll casting in the small and intricate channels of the marshland was one example of how golden dorado fishing consta

Muscat

Muscat

Muscat, Oman Dating back to the 1st century CE, Muscat was an important trading post between the East and the West, and it remains that way today. Bordered to the north and west by the Gulf of Oman, fishing has been a mainstay in the region since the beginning. With deep water close to shore in Muscat, targeting open water species like tuna, dorado, and marlin is easy. If blue water is not your thing, the coastline has sprawling sandy beaches, secluded rocky bays, and sheer jagged cliffs where

Love Affair

Love Affair

how does one begin a tale of a love affair? Once upon a time? No, that is too much like a fairy tale. And we all know life is not really like that. This story of love weaves throughout my adult years like a golden thread through a tapestry and has had me wrapped up for a while. But to tell this tale, I need to start at the beginning. Long time ago in a land far away … I grew up on a farm where life was full of freedom and adventure. I have three brothers of which two are older and one younger.

North Seal River

North Seal River

North Seal River, Manitoba, Canada The North Seal River in Manitoba is a remote wilderness destination. Want to try your hand at toothy critter fishing? This northern pike fishery offers size and quantity with trophy fish over 50” and 100 pike per day. North Seal area has excellent sight fishing. The pike sit in the submerged cabbage beds waiting for unlucky bait fish to pass. Pike don’t eat flies, they attack and devour them. This is something that every fly angler should experience. Ganglers.

DUN: What is your most memorable guiding experience? PS: I have had a lot of memorable guiding experiences, but the one that comes to mind was from a few years ago. I met an older lady named Brigette. She had gotten into fly fishing and was very keen on becoming a better angler, and on most occasions, she fished alone. The Bow River had been her nemesis for a couple of years, and as dedicated and determined as she was, she had yet to land a fish on this river. Knowing this, I was constantly in t

My name is Amalie. I’m 15 years old and I come from Denmark. My story begins four years ago, when my dad was working on an entry to our local fishing club’s fly tying competition. He was having some issues working out the right technique to weave the Polish woven nymph. By a happy coincidence, I had recently been doing something similar at school; so he asked me to have a go at it. I tried and it worked! With this success, my dad encouraged me to come to the fly tying competition.  I did attend

Pool Party

Pool Party

For me, some of the best days on the water involve more than just fishing. While we often endure seemingly endless streaks of harsh conditions while fishing, one’s appreciation of calm, blue-sky days can also become magnified. I’m reminded of a particular day, the last day of our annual trip to New Zealand. We’d planned a trip on the water with our friends Serge and Sharron and their pups. Outings with these friends always prove to be an adventure and I expected nothing less that day. Our hike

Opening Day In Iceland

Opening Day In Iceland

I was offered the opportunity to join a fishing party opening day on the Laxá in Dölum River in Iceland, in June 2016. Salmon river openings are always fun. Although the catches are few, there are always big salmon caught and you are lucky if you are the one catching! The opening party landed 42 salmon in 2-1/2 days of fishing. We were three couples and decided to divide the river into three beats and fish with three shared rods. Great company, beautiful river, good food and the chance of catc

Not Your Typical Stag and Hen Escape

Not Your Typical Stag and Hen Escape

I live in the Lake District of England. I am a qualified casting instructor with the Game Angling Instructors Association and have fished my entire life.  In February, my husband and I went to the British Fly Fair in England and met a Czech fishing guide named Petre Axamit, who showed a film of the fabulous fishing for wild trout and grayling in the mountainous region of the Czech Republic.  He appeared very honest and spoke excellent English, so we asked him for the best time of year to visit h
