Black Earth Angling Co.
Hello DUN! Thanks for doing this. I am the owner and lead guide for Black Earth Angling Co. (BEAC), a guide company based near Madison, WI. I've always been an entrepreneur, from having a successful worm (bait) selling business at a young age, to a photography service that helped get me through college, to now - Black Earth Angling Co. I've built my guide program from the ground up, burning the candle at both ends; bartending in the evenings, on the water during the day. I did this until I was able to take BEAC full time.
Like many small business owners, I've poured my heart and soul into this passion career and wouldn't trade it for the world. I strive to be a steward, conservationist, and role model to others. I'm proud to have given numerous motivational talks at schools titled "Pursue Your Passion," in hopes to inspire and motivate young minds. I've always had a goal of being more than just a guide. My motivation is people's happiness on the water and in the out of doors.
The current situation in WI does not allow for guides to operate until May 26th at the earliest, and the future is unknown past that date. I've lost 3 months of trout and pike trips, but most importantly I've struggled with not being with others on the water. It is easy to slip into a dark headspace when the future is unknown and you are unable to perform your job which is also your passion. I've been searching out other activities (turkey hunting, foraging, wood splitting, house projects) to keep my mind actively away from negativity. Wisconsin allows fishing as a personal or family affair, but I have surprisingly found limited joy in fishing for myself. It is the educational aspect of guiding on the water that is missed dearly.
BEAC guides all skill levels and genders of anglers for Driftless trout, smallmouth bass, and esox species. Our season is March - October with June through August being our busiest months. Outside of your standard day trips, BEAC specializes in overnight, multi-day "camp" experiences and top-notch homemade food sourced from local purveyors Black Earth Cuisine. In order to build and maintain a strong and welcoming community, BEAC hosts winter fly tying socials called "Drinking with Scissors."
I appreciate any support, whether it be kind words or otherwise. I hope to weather this COVID19 storm and continue to better our fly fishing community for many years to come!
